Rating: You Should Go
My dad was having back surgery in Long Beach this past weekend, and we needed to find a place to grab some lunch besides the hospital cafeteria. I found Santa Fe Importers on Yelp. It was highest rated for lunch in the area and one of the cheapest. As we were driving there, the
area seemed a little unwelcoming, but once we found the place it seemed safe. That part of long beach was clean and nice.
Santa Fe Importers is an Italian deli and market. It's the kind of place that is basically a grocery store for pastas and related items, but also has a fully functioning food service area. To order hot food, you go to a window along the back wall and tell the person what you'd like. Sandwiches are around $7 each for a 7-inch. They also have pasta dishes. We ordered meatball sandwiches with cheese, and Nate got a slice of garlic cheese bread (which was basically half of a sub roll). For drinks, we picked out bottled sodas from the refrigerators along the side wall then payed for our food at the front. The seating consists of a long skinny table and stools along the windows, so you look out on the street when you eat. The food was SO GOOD! The meatballs were tender and not at all gritty. The bread was delicious and it was smothered in sauce and cheese. My brother (who was also with us) got the pastrami sandwich and he also really enjoyed that. The 7-inch was enough for me to take a little bit home, but would probably be just the right amount for most people. If you're in the area, give this place a try. You won't be disappointed.
