This was our first time ever camping in Hurkey Creek Park so we didn't really know what to expect. It's near Idyllwild, which my family went to at least once a year when I was growing up, but a little more dry. We stayed in sites 6 and 7,
which had a fair amount of trees. In general, it's probably good to bring some sort of cover to sit under during the day, because it can get really hot in the sun. There's a large, open, grassy area for families to play in (as well as sprinklers during the day for kids to run through), a playground, and some hiking trails. The trails were well worn for the most part but split off in many different directions. It may be wise to get a trail map if you're not familiar with the area. We took the trail up the hill toward the rocks. It was a lot of fun climbing the rocks and getting a good view of the valley. This park is also a good place to bike ride if you bring your own bikes.
There's no cost to get into the park, and the site was $40 for the weekend (plus a $7 reservation fee), which is allowed to fit 6 people (even though there was plenty more room than that). A week reservation is $140 plus the $7 fee. Even though there are relatively few bathrooms compared to number of weekend campers, they are cleaned twice a day so they don't get unbearable. There are only 2 shower stalls per bathroom building, and they take quarters (so come prepared). Two quarters gets you 3 minutes of water. If you put in more than 2 at a time you'll just be ripping yourself off because the shower only does 3 minute increments (instead wait until the water turns off and then add 2 more quarters). This is a good spot for a lazy weekend with family and friends.
