Party Idea #4: Santa Claus Conquers the Martians

Martian-mallow
B-movies are a favorite of ours.  We love to watch them and make fun of them ourselves, or watch them with RiffTrax and laugh along with the commentary.  Santa Claus Conquers the Martians is one such movie that we found while watching Mystery Science Theater 3000 (MST3K for us geeks) that has become a Christmas tradition in our house.  We choose to watch it with the MST3K commentary, but it's also ridiculous just on its own.

We decided just to make this party a dessert get-together
because all of us were so busy around Christmas time.  Each of us brought a snack or dessert.  I made Martian-mallows (a reference made in the movie) and my friend made Minion cupcakes (like from Despicable Me).  This time around we did not play a game, but there is a version of the game Fluxx that has Martians and would be very apropos.  It's a simple get together full of laughs, if you like that kind of thing.

Minion Cupcakes

Food: Martian Mallows, desserts, salty snacks to balance
Movies:  Santa Claus Conquers the Martians
Games:  Martian Fluxx
Martian-mallow Recipe: (makes 14-15)
  • 1 bag jumbo-sized marshmallows (for the body)
  • 1 bag green melting chocolate from Michael's (as a coating)
  • 1 bag Red Hots for eyes (the ONLY place I found these was the $1 stores)
  • 1 box Green Sour Straws (for antenae)
  • 1 bag long sticks from Michael's
Melt the chocolate in the microwave as directed on the bag.  Then stick each marshmallow on a stick and dip it in the melted chocolate.  I stuck the coated marshmallows into a peace of Styrofoam and placed them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes to harden.  After that, dip the Red Hots and Sour Straws into the melted chocolate and stick them onto the marshmallow body.  Those harden while you hold them.  They're ready to enjoy!
