Temecula Turkey Trot

The Giant Hill to Cougar Winery
Rating: You Might Like It

This Thanksgiving we decided to find a more local 5k (even though it's still a 45 minute drive from us).  This one was not only closer, it was on the Saturday after Thanksgiving instead of Thanksgiving Day, which made it nice not to have to rush back for a big family lunch.  The Temecula Turkey Trot starts at the top of a hill at a place called Cougar Winery.  There was plenty of parking along the main road at the
bottom of the hill but nothing at the top by the time we got there a half hour before.  The cost of the run was $25 a person (for both the 5K and 10K) for adults and $15 for children.  You can also register dogs for $8.  The proceeds go to a foundation called Sun Strides which provides electricity for 3rd world countries by means of solar power.

The run is still pretty small (I believe this was only their 2nd year), but there were a few vendor tents advertising their goods and giving out free health drinks.  The race is on dirt roads along the backs of vineyards.  There is a 5K and 10K, both of which follow a path that has gradual hills (except for the steep one at the end to get back up to the winery).  The only thing I don't like about the route is that is crosses back over itself instead of making a loop, which I think is less interesting.  There was also no shade, although the air was cold at that time in November so I welcomed the sun's warmth.  At the end of the race they had a free raffle for active wear and free wine tasting if you felt like sticking around for them.
