Palatki Pictographs |
Palatki Ruins - You Might Like It
The Palatki Ruins are ancient Native American dwellings on the outskirts of Sedona. For a country as new as ours, it's really interesting to see art and the remains of buildings that are thousands of years old. There is also a small dwelling made by a settler a few hundred years ago (seen below).
You used to be able to walk right up to and into the ruins, but apparently a crack formed in the rocks above and you can only view them from quite a distance now. It's better for its pictographs, which are relatively graffiti free and much more visible than some. These you can walk right up to and a docent is on hand the answer any questions. You're supposed to make reservations (call 928-282-4119) and schedule a time. Plan for some driving time since it's about an hour outside of Sedona and most of the trip is on dirt roads. Don't worry, you won't need a jeep for them - they're just a bit bumpy.

The trail to the Honanki Ruins. |
Honanki Ruins - You Should Go
I had never been to the Honanki Ruins before, but I really enjoyed these. First, the trail is very green and shady. It's a little bit of a hike from the information booth to the ruins, but you can walk right up to the ruins at this place. There is a clearly defined path that makes a 2 miles loop. It's an easy trail that's fun to walk. There are no less pictographs than the Palatki Ruins but makes for a better hike. There are also no docents along the trail to give you the history. To find these ruins, just go down the same road that leads to Palatki and follow the signs for Honanki. It's a few miles further but I think it's worth the drive.

Midgley Bridge |
Midgley Bridge - You Should Go
The Midgley Bridge is just a short drive from the main part of Sedona but worth a visit. We went around sunset, which (as you can tell) is a beautiful sight. There is a trail that leads down the hillside and along the river which I would probably take on my next trip. For this trip, just seeing the sunset along this bridge was worth the trip.

The view from inside |
This is a really unique building that's worth a stop. It's free to go inside. Just be respectful - it's still a functioning church building. I think I would get distracted by the beautiful views if I went to this church. For visitors, though, it's a great destination and a wonderful use of the local beauty in architecture.
Silver Son West - You Might Like It
Silver Son West is a shop where local artists can share and sell their goods. There are items big and small, average and abnormal. There is food and books as well as nick-knacks. If you like local art, this is the place for you. Otherwise, you probably want to give this a skip.
