Believe 5K/10K

Rating: You Should Go

The Believe Walk for the Cure is another big Stater Bros event that I just learned about this year.  This one was held on a Sunday morning in October and there was the option to do a 5K or 10K.  We chose to walk the 10K with our friends and their dog.  The walk had a lot going on.  There were people who spoke before the walk (which made us start rather late), hand-made posters lining the streets, and tons of vendors donating free stuff afterward.  They even gave out fruit and water bottles before the walk.

The walk itself had its ups and downs (literally).  There were some hills and some pretty sunny spots.  If you've never been on a charity walk before, you may be surprised to find teams of cheerleaders from local high schools cheering you on as they stand in the shade near the starting line.  At about the 6K mark, when we were walking uphill in an area completely exposed to the sun, I was wondering where those people were when we needed them most.  Little girls passed out small ribbons and paperclips bent into the familiar breast cancer ribbon shape.  There were tables here and there with cups of water or sports drinks.  If you're doing the 10K, however, I highly recommend bringing one of those free water bottles along with you, because there are times when the water tables get scarce.  The path was very dog friendly, though, with free treats and even some water tubs for the pooches to drink from along the way.

After the walk, there's free food from tons of vendors.  There was popcorn, soda, Powerade, Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches, chicken sandwiches from Bakers, sausage biscuits from Jimmy dean, hot dogs, pizza, rice, and a lot more.  There was so much stuff it made me wonder if we'd been missing out on free stuff at other walks we'd been to.  Access to all that free food and a free T-shirt comes with your $30 registration fee ($25 if you register early).  We really enjoyed just exercising, talking, and hanging out while helping those in need.
