Williamette Valley Fruit in Salem, OR

Rating: You Should Go

While in Oregon, we passed several signs that advertised pick-your-own berries for $1 a pound.  Having grown up in the suburbs and never picked any berries of our own, we couldn't pass up the experience or the deal.  We went to the Williamette Valley Fruit Company's new building in Salem, OR.

We went inside the store (which is also where you can watch the workers making fresh pies) and the lady at the counter told us where we could go to pick the berries we wanted.  We chose marionberries since we had never heard of them before.  You have to bring our own containers but you could pick as much as you want.  The farther away from the center, the more berries you'll find.  We picked for about 10 minutes, and between one very ambitious berry picker (Nate's mom) and two rather lazy ones, we had about 5 pounds of berries.

When we got back to the store, a worker weighed our berries and gave us a receipt to pay for them inside.  We rewarded ourselves with dessert for all our hard work.  Nathan got an apple pie layered between ice cream, and I got a strawberry shortcake.  Both were too much for us to eat in one sitting, so it might be a good idea for people with normal appetites to share a dessert.  We also bought some personal-sized pies that were delicious.  Everything was very affordable (around $3-$5 besides the $1 per pound berries) and lots of fun.
